Wheelchair Basketball

Wheelchair Basketball is a form of basketball usually played by the physically impaired. Participants play on specially designed wheelchairs, built specifically for the sport.

Wheelchair basketball is a form of basketball played by athletes with a disability. It is played under the same rules as basketball and on a regulation basketball court.

The goal of wheelchair basketball is to score more points than the other team by the end of regulation. Should regulation end in a tie, the game goes to overtime until a winner is decided.

Wheelchair basketball uses the International Basketball Federation's rules as its guide. However, there are very specific rules governing the type, dimensions, and accessories of the wheelchairs players use. These rules are in place because the wheelchair is considered an extension of the player's body and must be followed in order to be eligible to play. The first game of wheelchair basketball was played in the United States in 1946 by a group of disabled World War II veterans. In 1948, wheelchair netball was added to the Stoke Mandeville Games, and it was not until 1956 that wheelchair basketball debuted at the games. Since then the sport has grown in popularity and reached all parts of the world. In 1993, the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation was established as the world body for wheelchair basketball with full responsibility for development of the sport. It is estimated that more than 100,000 men, women, and children play wheelchair basketball as a recreation, club play, or as part of a national team.

Players undergo the same kind of training as typical basketball players in order to improve their ball control, stamina, defensive skills, and shot, as well as learning to run various plays on offense and defense.
